Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa: Work Remotely from Europe in 90 Days
Designed for US remote workers, freelancers, and online entrepreneurs. Live in Portugal legally while keeping your US salary, US employer, or US-based business. EU residency from day one.
What Is the D8 and Why It Was Built for You
The Portugal D8 visa was created in late 2022 specifically for the new generation of location-independent professionals. If you earn income remotely from US (or non-Portuguese) sources — whether as an employee, freelancer, or business owner — the D8 is the cleanest legal pathway to live and work in Europe.
Unlike the D7 (which requires passive income like rental or dividends), the D8 explicitly accepts active remote work. You can keep your US W-2 job, your US-based 1099 freelance clients, or your US LLC — and live in Portugal full-time, legally.
Keep Your US Job
Your employer doesn’t need to do anything special. You remain a US employee, paid in USD to your US bank account. We handle the Portuguese side.
Tax Advantages
Portugal’s new IFICI regime (successor to NHR) offers significant tax relief for qualifying remote professionals. We help you assess eligibility upfront.
Bring Your Family
Spouse, children, and even dependent parents qualify under the same application. Income threshold scales modestly per dependent.

Important: May 2026 Citizenship Law Change
On May 13, 2026, Portugal extended the residency-to-citizenship timeline from 5 years to 10 years. The D8 visa itself is unaffected — you can still apply and receive residency. The change only affects when you can convert that residency into a Portuguese passport. Read our full analysis: Portugal Citizenship Law Change Explained

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to actually live in Portugal full-time?
The D8 expects genuine residency. You can’t legally use it as a vacation visa. The threshold is typically 183+ days per year in Portugal. If you need flexibility to spend significant time outside Portugal, the Golden Visa is a better fit.
How does this affect my US taxes?
You remain a US tax resident as a citizen, but you also become a Portuguese tax resident. The US-Portugal tax treaty prevents double taxation, and Portugal’s IFICI regime offers significant relief on foreign-source income for qualifying applicants. We don’t give tax advice ourselves but connect you with US-Portugal CPAs who specialize in this.
Can I bring my pets?
Yes. Dogs and cats are welcome with EU pet passports (rabies vaccine, microchip, USDA endorsement). We can refer you to a pet relocation specialist.
What if my income drops below $4,200/month after I move?
Your visa is granted based on income at application time. If income decreases later, you can still maintain residency as long as you don’t become a financial burden on the state. We help structure your finances to provide a buffer.
